About the Program
Our program is the leading global accelerator for innovative startups solving problems in Energy Efficiency, Energy Independence, Digitisation, and Analytics.
“Smart Energy is about product, process, and business-model innovation in a rapidly changing marketplace. The energy industry, which hasn’t drastically innovated in the last two decades, is suddenly seeing 360-degree disruption that is going to change everything in the next 10 years. It’s one thing to know that change is coming, and it’s another to know what to do and how to act to stay relevant. At Startupbootcamp, we help our 140 corporate partners around the globe think & act. Our partners here in Melbourne have a strong desire to work with startups locally on global solutions. During the 3-month program and beyond, we will work closely alongside the program’s startups and partners to accelerate those kinds of meaningful collaborations.”
– Trevor Townsend, Managing Director
During our intense 3-month accelerator program, selected Smart Energy startups receive hands-on mentorship from over 100 industry experts, free office space, seed funding, and access to a global network of investors with the ultimate goal of scaling their businesses and becoming industry-leading companies. The video below showcases Startupbootcamp’s Demo Day, where startups present their companies to over 300 partners, mentors, investors, and customers on the final day of the program.
Melbourne’s Key Position in Asia-Pacific and the Rest of the World
As a key economy in the Asia Pacific region, Australia has strong relationships and easy access to the fastest-growing countries in the world. Melbourne has a vibrant and rapidly evolving startup ecosystem supported by some of the world’s top universities and research laboratories, giving it a number of advantages in the region. The city is ranked fourth globally as a knowledge hub and is rapidly becoming the tech capital of Australia. Major U.S. tech companies like Zendesk, Slack, Square, Hired, Stripe, and GoPro chose Melbourne to establish their Asia Pacific headquarters.
Melbourne is also the GREATEST place to live and work. Did you know, it’s been ranked as the world’s most liveable city for the past seven years running! Melbourne is a city of art, music, technology, education, and ideas. It’s a city known for its sensational coffee, world-class food, sports, laneways, and events.
The program is headed by local Managing Director Trevor Townsend, who has an extensive background in Melbourne as an investor, director, and founder. He was the Managing Director of Australasia at TIBCO Software, a Silicon Valley startup, which listed on NASDAQ in 2004, and designed the first wholesale-energy software trading system in Australia during this time. He also has over 15 years of angel-investing experience with numerous exits, including two ASX listings.
Program Director Richard Celm has worked in and with startups in Australia & UK. He sold companies in Australia & USA, two of which were NASDAQ listed, set up an Innovation Centre in London, and spent ten years delivering startup programs as head of Accelerator London in “Tech City”. Richard managed the Emerald Fund, established a charity in London for returned soldiers, and has mentored on Cambridge University’s Queen’s Young Leaders program.
